The Borehole Research Group of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University (http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu) is seeking Electrical Engineers for one or two open rank positions. The potential individuals will be involved in the development of downhole-logging instruments and supporting the use of existing instruments on a scientific drill-ship.
The successful candidate(s) will be involved with all stages of instrument development, from concept through design, overseeing of construction, testing and calibration, documentation (both user manuals and technical documentation for maintenance), preparation for field deployment, and support during use.
The candidates will be providing the majority of electronics design expertise in the group, so must have broad skills. Specific areas of expertise and qualifications for each position are the following:
Senior Staff Associate
Experience in analog and digital electronics design, embedded programming in C and/or C++, LabVIEW programming for data acquisition and user interface are required. Experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, and Pspice software, preferably Altium Designer, a plus. Desirable skills include experience in building and/or deploying geophysical logging equipment. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in English, required. A minimum of eight years of related experience is required with BSEE/BSCE degree or four years of related experience with MS degree.
Staff Associate
Must be able to perform electronic hardware and firmware designs with analog and digital circuits including circuit simulation and circuit analysis, noise analysis, grounding and shielding analysis and power requirement analysis. Design experience with thorough understanding of analog and digital circuits such as OP-amps, A/D, D/A, Microcontroller and FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) preferably with Xilinx FPGAs is a plus. Desirable skills include experience in building and/or deploying geophysical logging equipment. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in English, required. Sea/field duty of up to two months per year may be necessary. A minimum of four years of related experience is required with BSEE/BSCE degree or 2 years of related experience with a MS degree.
